What the numbers show
A few patterns stand out across the three ownership types.
- The sector is mostly for-profit. For-profit companies run 359 of Ontario's homes (about 56%). Non-profit organizations run about 44% and municipalities about 0%.
- Findings per home are close across all three. Each type averages between 0.0 and 11.5 findings per home per year, so ownership type on its own is a weak guide to how often a home is cited.
- The differences stay small, even on the serious measures. All three types average about one compliance order per home per year (1.2 for-profit, 1.1 non-profit, 0.0 municipal), a gap of less than one finding a year. Fines per bed vary more, from about $0 for municipal homes to $22 for-profit, but fines are rare and concentrated in a few homes, so even that gap rests on a small number of cases.
- Municipal homes are the largest but cited least. Municipal homes average 0 beds, the largest of the three types, yet record the fewest findings per home, running against the pattern that larger homes tend to record more.
